Training
The Beaufort Police Department takes water and boating safety very seriously. The department has certified police boat operators who begin their training by attending the Power Squadron’s basic boater’s class. These officers then attend a 40-hour class in Marine Law Enforcement, presented by the SC Department of Natural Resources, or equivalent training.
This class involves:
- Boater safety
- Boat handling
- Boating under the influence (BUI) detection
- Enforcement
- Equipment and registration laws
- Boarding and wake violations
- Search and rescue coordination.
- Trailering
