Historic Review Board

*The Historic District Review Board will no longer accept project submittals past the deadline for new applications.

The City of Beaufort’s Historic District Review Board (HRB) is charged with the mission of aiding in the preservation, protection and enhancement of the Beaufort National Historic Landmark District. The Board reviews the following types of activities within the District:

  • New construction and additions
  • Demolition; and
  • Renovation, rehabilitation, restoration.

The Unified Development Ordinance Article 4, Section 4:9 and Article 2, Section 2.7, establishes the boundaries of the Beaufort Historic District and outlines the responsibilities of the HRB. The Historic District is divided into two subdistricts: the Preservation Neighborhood and the Conservation Neighborhood (also known as the Northwest Quadrant). For projects located in the Preservation Neighborhood, guidance for the board’s decisions is provided by the Beaufort Preservation Manual and the Beaufort Preservation Manual Supplement. The Northwest Quadrant Design Principles provides guidance for projects in the Conservation Neighborhood (Northwest Quadrant).

Meetings of the Historic District Review Board are held once a month, on the second Wednesday of the month, at 2:00 p.m. in City Hall, located at 302 Carteret Street.

Copies of the 1979 Milner Historic District Inventory, 1997 Beaufort County Above Ground Historic Resources Survey and Sanborn Fire Insurance Company Maps are available in the Planning Department.
