City Council to get budget details at Work Session

BEAUFORT, S.C. (May 18, 2020) – At its Work Session on Tuesday, May 19, Beaufort City Council will be presented with City Manager Bill Prokop’s recommended budget for Fiscal Year 2021, which starts on July 1.

The recommended budget takes into consideration the financial hits from the Covid-19 pandemic, including a significant decline in the City’s Parks and Tourism Fund and State Accommodations Fund as accommodations and hospitality taxes decline with fewer tourists and visitors.

The belt-tightening at the City includes a freeze on vacant positions and a deferral on some infrastructure and repair projects. At the same time, expenses for tort insurance, health insurance, pension contributions and vendor contracts will increase.

To mitigate some of the revenue losses, the City is proposing a $25 road fee per vehicle to cover some street and sidewalk repair expenses, and a $10 increase in annual stormwater fees to $145 to help cover needed stormwater projects and ongoing maintenance.

The proposed operating budget is $23.1 million, which is flat compared to the current year’s budget.

The Work Session will be conducted online via Zoom, and will be streamed live on the City’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/CityBeaufortSC/). Public comments can be made via Facebook.
