V.O.I.C.E.S.
In January of 1998 the Beaufort Police Department implemented a program to address the needs of citizens who have limited access to resources and outside contact. The program was designed to ensure daily contact was conducted with volunteers. If these volunteers are unable to reach the person after several attempts, a police officer is dispatched to eh residence to check on things. This system has on occasion resulted in an elderly or ill individual in need of medical treatment being discovered early and avoided potentially tragic
situations.
The Golden Girls (two on left and three on right) are a group of volunteers who come in, to the Beaufort City Police Department, on their own time and assist us in identifying, calling, and conducting health and welfare checks on citizens within the city that have no one to turn to and are only dependent on themselves. These are usually senior citizens that need to be checked on from time to time. With their help were are able to expand our community policing services to the elderly and handicap within the City of Beaufort. We have been blessed to have them in our presence.
