City of Beaufort Government

Thank you for visiting our beautiful and historic City’s website! We strive to provide accurate, transparent and up-to-date information on a variety of topics that may affect you as a resident, business or visitor.

Founded in 1711, Beaufort is South Carolina’s second oldest city. Our rich cultural heritage is part of our daily life, and we strive to protect and preserve our City’s history in the 304-acre National Historic Landmark District.

Our Council-Manager form of government utilizes a five-member City Council, including the mayor. All members are elected at-large by voters within the city limits. They set policy and govern through their single employee, the City Manager. The City Manager is responsible for day-to-day operations, as well as carrying out policy decisions made by the City Council. Each member is whole-heartedly devoted to keeping the well-being of the City and it's residents and visitors in mind while fulfilling every task at hand.
