The City of Beaufort Historic Review Board (HRB) is a five-member Board.  The members are appointed by City Council for two year terms.  Each member may serve on two consecutive terms.  The Historic Review Board is charged with the mission of aiding in the preservation, protection and enhancement of the Beaufort National Historic Landmark District.  The Board reviews the following types of activities within the District:

  • New construction and additions;
  • Demolition; and
  • Renovation, rehabilitation, restoration.

The Unified Development Ordinance, Article 4, Section 4:0 and Article 2, Section 2.7, establishes the boundaries of the Beaufort Historic District and outlines the responsibilities of the HRB.  The Historic District is divided into two sub-districts:  the Preservation Neighborhood and the Conservation Neighborhood (also known as the Northwest Quadrant).  For projects located in the Preservation Neighborhood, guidance for the Board's decisions is provided by the Beaufort Preservation Manual and the Beaufort Preservation Manual Supplement.  The Northwest Quadrant Design Principles provides guidance for projects in the Conservation Neighborhood (Northwest Quadrant).

Copies of the 1979 Milner Historic District Inventory, 1997 Beaufort County Above Ground Historic Resources Survey and Sandborn Fire Insurance Company Maps are available in the Planning Department.

The HRB meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 2:00 PM.  Meetings are currently held at City Hall located at 1911 Boundary Street.
