The preservation and protection of the Historic Downtown District is an example of this commitment. Chartered in 1711, Beaufort is the second oldest city in South Carolina. In 1969 Beaufort was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 1973 was designated a National Historic Landmark District. Beaufort’s Historic District encompasses 340 acres and includes more than 430 contributing historic structures.
