Welcome to our beautiful city!

The City of Beaufort’s history dates to the 1500s, when the Spanish founded Santa Elena in 1566 on Parris Island in Port Royal Sound.

It’s not surprising that Beaufort celebrates its history, and that our Historic District is one of our crown jewels.

Coastal Living magazine proclaimed Beaufort the nation’s Happiest Seaside Town in 2013, citing "Lowcountry friendliness and urban refinement, antebellum architecture, exquisite local cuisine, and rich African-American heritage" as the basis for selection.

10 Great Neighborhoods in the USA

The American Planning Association listed the Beaufort Historic District as one of the 10 Great Neighborhoods in the USA for 2013. The district was chosen because of "its well-preserved architecture, sustainable design, natural features and focus on planning. The neighborhood’s beauty and history engender a strong sense of place -- and even stronger sense of community."

Over the last several years, Beaufort has landed on many Top 10, Prettiest, and Most Romantic lists! You can find those accolades at VisitBeaufort.org.
