Work continues steadily on the galvanized water main replacement project in the City. This is a multi-year project aimed at improving water quality. Work includes new PVC water mains, fire hydrants, water services, and meter boxes. As a reminder, the replacement of water service lines to customers is provided only to the meter. BJWSA will not replace any water services on private property between the meter and the house.
In this phase of the work, major work currently is being done on Harrington and South Hermitage. Remaining streets in this phase include Calhoun Street, Church Street and Pine Court. Once the lines are replaced, there should be notable water quality improvements.
BJWSA is also moving forward with its North Street Transmission Main project. This design-build project includes a large-diameter water transmission main that will be constructed from Robert Smalls Parkway to Duke Street. Approximately half of the project will be placed along the Spanish Moss Trail and the majority of the other half will be placed in North Street.
This 20-inch water transmission main will improve service for our customers, maximize capacity for emergencies such as fire protection, and ensure compliance with South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) requirements. Construction is anticipated to start this fall and end this time next summer. BJWSA staff will be presenting more information about this project at the Aug. 24, 2021 City Council meeting.
