[ARCHIVED] 'Tell Me a Story' is the art theme for Chalk It Up! festival

BEAUFORT, S.C. (Feb. 13) -- There will be lots of artistic storytelling at the Chalk It Up! festival in Beaufort next month! Artists will be drawing inspiration from the theme “Tell Me a Story,” as they create giant chalk illustrations directly onto the pavement of a parking lot in downtown Beaufort, March 23-24.

One such artist is Chelsey Scott, a Master Street Artist who is coming from Atlanta. Best known for her use of color and unique freehand method, Chelsey’s approach is to combine realism and fantasy to bring an image to life — to tell a story.

Chelsey entered the world of chalking, aka street art, after being inspired by her high school's festival in 2005. Now she participates in chalk festivals around the country, is a member of the Florida Chalk Art Association, and the Georgia Chalk Artist Guild. She is one of many artists who will be visiting Beaufort for the first time to participate in Chalk It Up! Festival organizers have received applications from artists in Georgia, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and even Mexico.

Organized by the Freedman Arts District, Chalk It Up! is a free two-day festival that celebrates the artistic process while drawing the community together. Artists will be creating large chalk artwork on the pavement while chatting with the public, explaining their work, and telling their story. Other entertainment will include local musicians both Saturday and Sunday and a kids-zone tent with hands-on art activities.

Call for Artists!

It’s not too late to participate as an artist; the deadline has been extended. Go to www.FreedmanArtsDistrict.org for the application and guidelines.
