[ARCHIVED] Mask ordinance extended through April 9

Whitehall Park concept planBEAUFORT, S.C. – At its Regular Meeting on Feb. 9, Beaufort City Council approved an extension of the City’s mask ordinance through April 9. The ordinance, to help prevent the spread of Covid-19, applies to buildings accessible to the public in the City of Beaufort. Employees in such establishments must also wear masks.

In other business, City Council approved the plan for Whitehall Park, a 9.7-acre passive park on Lady’s Island across from downtown Beaufort. The plan, developed by Wood+Partners landscape architects, includes a picnic pavilion, a gathering lawn, a bike path, and various walking trails.

The park is owned by Beaufort County, and will be maintained by the City of Beaufort beginning in July. It is known for its scenic vistas and majestic live oaks. The park, which is currently open, will close during construction, said Stephanie Nagid, the passive parks manager for Beaufort County. She said construction is not likely to start until the spring of 2022.

City Council also approved a plan to upgrade landscaping at Scott Street and the Circle of Palms. This will create a more walkable area and allow for a view of Beaufort River.

City Council also appointed Beaufort residents Helen Spalding and Darrell Wallace to six-year terms on the Elections Commission.
