Charles/Craven Street and Port Republic/Carteret Street Stormwater Project

McCormick Taylor, in coordination with the South Carolina Office of Resilience and the City of Beaufort, plans to design and implement stormwater drainage improvements throughout the Charles/Craven Street and Port Republic/Carteret Street project areas to alleviate persistent local flooding and stormwater drainage issues. This project was identified through the completion of “The Point and Downtown Drainage Study” completed in August 2022.

The project is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act grant through the South Carolina's Office of Resilience’s ARPA-Funded Stormwater Infrastructure Program.

These project areas are located within natural depressions. Much of the infrastructure was installed in the early 1900s and is undersized and inadequate to convey the City’s increasing storm events and rising high tides.

Proposed stormwater improvement plans include new and enlarged storm drainpipes, new drainage inlets and drainage structures, and flap gates at outfalls to limit tidal water intrusion into the system. At the completion of the project, the affected roadways will be resurfaced, and sidewalks disrupted by the project will be repaired. Best practices for stormwater management will be used to improve the quality of the water that is being discharged into the Beaufort River.

This project will result in temporary street closures to allow for the excavation and placement of the storm-drain infrastructure. Road closures will be closely coordinated with business and property owners well in advance.
