BEAUFORT, S.C. (Oct. 9, 2024) – As Hurricane Milton barrels toward Florida, the City of Beaufort is prepared to deal with any potential impacts from the storm. The Public Works, Police and Fire Departments are ready to deploy as needed.
Our area is currently under a Tropical Storm Watch. The main impacts expected in our area include storm surge of from 2 to 4 feet, and gusty winds. No substantial rain is expected. High tide Thursday afternoon, Thursday evening, and Friday afternoon may add to the impact of the storm surge.
Tropical storm force winds are most likely to affect our area Thursday afternoon. Sustained winds are expected to be in the 20-30 mph range, with maximum gusts at 30-40 mph. However, because of being weakened by Hurricane Helene, some trees and limbs may be susceptible to breaking, so don’t be surprised by downed trees and limbs. We may also experience isolated power outages.
Conditions are expected to improve later Thursday night into Friday.
When it comes to clearing roads, Public Works has a system. The department’s first priority is clearing main roadways connected to the Fire/Police Departments and Beaufort Memorial Hospital. “All roadways are inspected prior to crews being deployed to ensure safety and ability to remove the hazard, tree, and/or debris” said Public Works Director Nate Farrow. “Any tree or debris located within a utility will be documented and reported to the proper provider. Once it has been removed from the utility, Public Works will finish removing the debris/tree from the roadway.”
Priorities when clearing roads are as follows:
Main roadways
Hwy 21 Trask Parkway & Sea Island Parkway; US Business 21 (Boundary/Carteret/Parris Island Gateway), Hwy 170 Robert Smalls Parkway, Hwy 281 Ribaut Road.
Ancillary roadways (main roadways within neighborhoods and districts)
Some examples in no particular order:
Burton Hill Road, Polk Street, Greenlawn Drive, Sycamore Street, Palmetto Street, Bay Street, Charles Street, Bladen Street, Hermitage Road, First Boulevard, Spanish Point Road, Mossy Oaks Road, Otter Circle, Satilla Boulevard, Needlegrass Drive, Islands Avenue, Bostick Circle, Prescott Drive, Salty Hammock Court, Salem Bay Drive, B.E. Wheatly, Pigeon Point Road.
Final roadways
All additional roadways not covered within Main/Ancillary. This includes all roadways located within the City limits of Beaufort.
If road clearing is needed in the aftermath of Milton, we ask our residents to be patient and courteous to our crews.
As with any hurricane, Milton’s path could change. Please take precautions and please stay safe.
