[ARCHIVED] Council approves 2020-2022 Strategic Plan

BEAUFORT, S.C. (Sept. 23, 2020) – City Council approved the City of Beaufort’s 2020-2022 Strategic Plan at its Regular Meeting on Sept. 22.

The Strategic Plan, which sets out a roadmap for objectives over the next two years, was discussed at the annual retreat held in February that included Mayor Billy Keyserling, City Council members, City Manager Bill Prokop and department heads and managers. Four “Key Focus Areas” were outlined at that time: Economic Development & Innovation; A Safe & Vibrant City; Growth & Natural Resources; and Organizational Excellence.

Subsequently, departments fleshed out initiatives tied to the objectives and aligned with the budget. “The plan spells out each objective and what we’re going to achieve and how we’re going to achieve them, and that will be helpful to Council moving forward. We also use it to tie our budget together to the goals and objectives of each department,” Prokop said.

Mayor Keyserling noted that this is the third Strategic Plan the City has had. “The Strategic Plan is very helpful to keep us on track,” he said.

Mayor Pro Tem Mike McFee said having a Strategic Plan was helpful as council dealt with revenue issues this year related to Covid-19. “It was easier to identify the ramifications and ripple effects of shifts in certain line items, because the Strategic Plan touches on that. Kudos to the staff for continuing the process,” he said.
