[ARCHIVED] City meets with Dominion to address concerns

Tree pruning utility

BEAUFORT, S.C. (Jan. 8, 2020) – Officials from the City of Beaufort met again with officials from Dominion Energy via a a Zoom conference call today (Jan. 8)  to address residents’ concerns as the utility company continues its scheduled tree-trimming in various Beaufort neighborhoods.

Since the current rotation began, in early December, some residents have expressed concern over Dominion’s pruning, which is done on trees with branches too close to power lines. Dominion typically prunes trees on a five-year rotation, and adheres to the American National Standard for Tree Care Operations (ANSI A300)

The City and Dominion abide by a comprehensive agreement signed in 1997 and updated in 2010 between the City and South Carolina Electric & Gas Co., which was acquired by Dominion.

The City recently retained arborist Michael Murphy, of Preservation Tree, LLC, to work with the City and Dominion’s arborist to ensure that trees are pruned correctly.

“We want to make sure we protect our tree assets as much as possible while ensuring that safety standards for our power lines are maintained,” Mayor Stephen Murray said during the meeting.

Mayor Murray asked that Dominion and City arborists do a walk-through together on remaining corridors before work begins on those corridors. Approximately 40% of the project has been completed, Dominion said.

Dominion customers can call the company with concerns at 800-251-7234.
