BEAUFORT, S.C. (Oct. 9, 2024) – City Council approved last night (Oct. 8) an ordinance that prohibits through-truck traffic on certain roads and highways in the City of Beaufort. This applies to medium and heavy trucks with three axles or more.
These roads are designated as not allowing through-truck traffic:
- Boundary Street, Carteret Street, and Sea Island Parkway (US21B) between Ribaut Road and Lady’s Island Drive, including the Woods Memorial Bridge.
- Bay Street between Ribaut Road and Carteret Street.
This prohibition also applies to any streets, roads or highways designated by South Carolina Department of Transportation signage as not being open to through-truck traffic.
Large, multi-axle trucks pose significant safety and damage risks within the Downtown Historic District, and the enforcement of this ordinance will help prevent those risks. The narrow streets in the Historic District cannot accommodate large trucks.
This ordinance does not apply to personal pickup trucks, passenger vans or buses. It also does not prevent trucks from making pickups and deliveries along those roads as long as the driver has documented proof of that work.
A violation of this ordinance is punishable by a fine of not more than $500 or imprisonment for not more than 30 days.
